Common questions

Why didn’t I get an SMS verification code?

Wait 60 seconds and tap “resend.” If it still doesn’t arrive, double-check your phone number includes the country code (e.g. +1 for US numbers). Some carriers delay short codes during high traffic — give it 5 minutes before trying a third time. After 3 failed attempts in an hour you’ll be rate-limited; this clears automatically after an hour.

How do I add friends?

Most reliable path post-onboarding is by username:

  • By username: Friends tab → tap the search bar → type their @username. Pending requests appear under the pending filter chip on your Friends tab — accept or decline from there.

The contacts-import flow runs once during onboarding. Beckon hashes phone numbers on your device before sending anything to the server, so we never see plaintext numbers. A re-run-from- Settings affordance is on the roadmap; for now, sign out + back in via Settings → Delete sign-in / re-verify to trigger it again.

Why can’t I send a beacon?

The only hard requirement is iCloud Keychain signed into the device. We use it to back up your per-beacon reveal keys; without it, a lost device means losing the ability to reveal who said yes to your past beacons. If iCloud Keychain is paused or you’re signed out, fix it at iOS Settings → your iCloud header → iCloud Keychain → On.

You’ll also see an anonymity warning when:

  • Your audience has fewer than 3 friends, OR
  • Your threshold is set to 1 (a single yes would identify the responder)

That’s a warning, not a block — you can proceed if you understand the anonymity tradeoff. We surface it because the threat model guarantees we make about anonymity-until-threshold weaken at small audience sizes.

A home location isn’t required to send a beacon (it’s only used for map rendering + privacy-blurred sharing with friends), but you’ll get a more useful map experience if you’ve set one under Settings → home location.

What happens if my beacon doesn’t hit threshold?

Nothing public. Friends saw the invitation; if not enough yeses came in, the beacon quietly expires. No one is told who said yes, who said no, or that the beacon failed. You can re-send with a lower threshold or different friends if you want.

Can I delete my account?

Yes — Settings → Delete my account.

Immediately on tap:

  • Your account is locked out (you can’t sign back in to the same number)
  • Your push tokens are revoked
  • Your refresh tokens are revoked
  • Your profile is hidden from every other user’s friends list, contacts match, and beacon audience

Within 90 days the underlying database row is hard-deleted on a scheduled purge — at which point your profile, friend graph, devices, beacons you organized, and your responses to others’ beacons are physically gone. The 90-day window is a safety net in case you delete by accident; if you want to wait it out and re-sign-up, contact us.

What stays even after hard-delete:

  • Names friends already learned in past beacon reveals (those live on their devices, not ours)
  • Anonymized aggregate metrics (no user-identifiable data)

We honor GDPR/CCPA deletion requests within 30 days of receipt (faster than the 90-day automatic window) — email privacy@beckonapp.info and we’ll force the hard-delete. See Privacy Policy for the full data-rights walkthrough.

What if the app crashes?

Force-quit + reopen. If it crashes again on the same screen, email support@beckonapp.info with:

  • Your phone model + iOS version (Settings → General → About)
  • What you were doing right before the crash
  • Whether it happens every time or just once

Crash reports are auto-collected via Apple’s Diagnostics service ONLY if you’ve enabled “Share with App Developers” in Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements. We don’t run any third-party tracking SDK.
